Hypnosis – The Truth Behind All The Myths

Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of a lot of myths created by layman’s imagination. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don’t consider them to be genuine scientific pursuits. Some of the common myths linked with hypnosis and the truth behind them are given below.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with black magic of any kind. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have a critical role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very easy to acquire and practice. Even people who have observed hypnosis on others often refuse to acknowledge it. They hold that the people who have been under hypnosis are mentally not powerful enough to resist the influence of the practitioner. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Hypnosis can be done on anyone regardless of his or her mental strength.

Another belief is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. A hypnotized individual is totally aware of his environment. During the hypnotic state, the subject calms down entirely and is hence able to concentrate fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.

Another misconception, which has been propagated by some researchers, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of the human population. The scientists are to some extent true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis technique without considering individual differences in character and disposition. People differ in their natures and personalities, and therefore there have to be different hypnosis methods to fit the temperaments of different individuals.

Many people take hypnosis to be a form of meditation. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and usually has nothing to do with communication. Trance too has no connection with hypnosis at all. Trance is again a mental state devoid of any communication, on the other hand communication forms the very foundation of the hypnosis method.

Another misconception is that physical and behavioural alterations in an individual are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is unnatural to the body. However, it can propel the body to a better shape through behavioural changes like eating in a controlled manner, and giving up smoking and other addictions by ensuring a high level of inspiration in an individual.

If a person falls for all the misconceptions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t venture to participate in a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a better and healthier life.
